Taylor's Guitar Studio
About Me
I first picked up the guitar at age 10, eager to master the instrument. However, frustration quickly set in—I couldn’t shred yet! Memorizing finger placements felt overwhelming, progress seemed slow, and, if I’m honest, I wasn’t practicing enough. After about a year, I gave up.
A few years later, the itch returned. One of the first songs I tried to learn on my own was Little Wing, and the moment I realized I could play something that resembled one of my favorite songs, I was hooked. From that point on, I immersed myself in music, forming bands with friends, playing live, and even touring to perform.
At 16, a pivotal moment changed my trajectory. After band rehearsal one night, we stopped by a local restaurant with live jazz. I had never seen someone play the guitar so effortlessly in person—the way the guitarist flowed with the band completely blew me away. After the set, I introduced myself and learned that he was a music director at a local community college. I had no idea you could go to college for guitar!
From that night forward, I set my sights on getting into a music program. I eventually earned my Associate's and Bachelor's degrees in Music (Jazz Concentration), determined to unlock the mysteries of music. But the journey wasn’t always easy. The more I studied, the more I noticed my own bad habits. I constantly compared myself to other musicians, felt like I wasn’t progressing fast enough, and at times, fell into deep frustration.
It wasn’t until a dear professor gave me life-changing advice that I began to shift my mindset:
1️⃣ "Never compare yourself to others." There will always be someone ahead of you and someone behind you. Music isn’t a competition—it’s about growth, expression, and lifting others up alongside you.
2️⃣ "Don’t expect too much too fast." Progress takes time. Remember why you started in the first place and be patient with yourself.
3️⃣ "Learn to enjoy the process." This was the most valuable lesson of all. Growth doesn’t happen overnight, but if you love the journey, you’ll never stop improving.
These principles continue to guide my playing and teaching philosophy today. My goal as an instructor is not just to teach you how to play the guitar, but to help you enjoy the process, develop confidence, and create music that feels truly your own.
